Twelve Symbols # 5
Praise the Lord Saints! This week we will be sharing the 5th object that is used with symbolic purpose. It is the Mirror. In reality, it means self-examination!
In James 1:22-25, the writer starts out by calling believers to be “doers”, emphasizing that their entire personality should reflect this, other than being simply hears. Then the writer compares the hearer of the word and not a doer of the word to someone who looks at himself in the
mirror, leaves and forgets what he has just seen in that mirror.
The Greek word translated here which means “looks,” means to observe carefully and cautiously, as opposed to just looking.
First century mirrors were made of metallic, bronze, silver, and if you were rich- gold. They beat the metals flat, and polished them to a high gloss. The reflection was good but not perfect!
In verse 24 the writer states that once you have forgotten yourself, or heard the word and forgotten what changes we need to make to ourselves based on the word, it is just like being a hearer who hears the word and does nothing with what he has heard.
Let us become faithful doers by examining ourselves and doing what it takes to please God!
